Why a History of Port Said?
For a brief window in time, from 1900-1939, Port Said was a truly international city, the first world city of the twentieth century and the gateway between two continents, Europe and Africa. All the world beat a path to its door.
Its early history is well documented in contemporary postcards, photographs and published recollections but, possibly from a natural reaction to the years of colonial rule, it is not well documented in the history of Egypt itself. This is a shame as these years were a vibrant period in the city's past when many nationalities and religions lived and worked together.
This site is intended as a tribute to the early years of Port Said and to all the people who built it and lived in it, Egyptian and foreigner alike. At a time when Port Said lay at the crossroads of the world.
This is a work in progress and more material will continue to be added, as I prepare it. Please feel free to contact me to add your own recollections. Please note this is a social history of Port Said not a political one or a military history, these aspects are well covered in other books by more expert historians than me.
